SLOAN 15.875 Application of System Dynamics: Global Challenges

When: Wednesdays 4-7pm

Where: E51-361

Description:

Do you want to use your MIT toolkit to make a difference in post-earthquake Haiti? Your management, systems, and analytical skills are urgently needed by the United States’ Joint Task Force in Haiti. Help by analyzing and considering the implications of humanitarian needs across sectors, making sense of rapid assessments now arriving from across Haiti. Students will get access to a stream of up-to-the-minute data on hospital beds, clean water, food, shelter, clothing, sanitation, etc. from major stakeholders on the ground, including the US military, Department of State, and Partners In Health, among others; our main contact in the Joint Task Force is coordinating their collaboration and is available for extensive interactions as required. The student team will assess data and consider frameworks for evaluating next steps, tapping into the expertise and resources of the MIT community as needed. The results are urgently needed for planning and decision-making.

Work on this project and others in 15.875, Applications of System Dynamics: Global Challenges. If you’ve taken the 15.871 System Dynamics course (concurrently enrolled students may be admitted with instructor permission), have Wednesdays 4-7 open, and can make it to E51-361 for a lively studio-style class, there may still be room for you. You’ll draw on System Dynamics’ rigorous, wide-reaching, and practical approach in your focused, client-oriented collaborative project addressing an issue of global import. Students apply to work on specific projects and will be matched in mid-February. Seize this chance to build your skills and address a complex challenge!
