Wind Everywhere
Why Wind?
Wind is a major force shaping our world (landscapes are in part shaped by wind). A nice constant breeze is a delight for windsurfers, sailors, gliders and hawks. Excessive wind on the other hand can cause major damages (e.g., hurricanes). The wind energy can be harnessed to produce power and alleviate our energy shortages. Wind helps create sound. This is how we speak, how the birds sing and how many musical instruments function (wind instruments and horns).
We focus on 4 themes connected to wind: environment, energy, aerodynamics and sounds. What is the impact (are the benefits) of wind on the environment? How can we harness wind to create energy? How do planes and birds fly? How is wind used to create sound and music?
Plan
We'll use our imagination and design things that use or create wind such as wind pumps, musical instruments, planes, boats, wind turbines. We'll visit organizations that can help us better understand wind: Boston Museum of Science, Wind Tunnel and the Edgerton Lab MIT, wind generator at Hull, weather station in Taunton) and places that help us be more creative (Toy Lab at MIT). In addition we'll build wind mills, paper planes, kites, motors and generators. Most importantly find time to have fun!
Schedule
Generally: 8-9 breakfast, 9-11:30 projects, 12-1 lunch, 2-4:30 activities, 5-6 dinner, 7-8 kids performances, 8:30pm: dodo. Interlaced field trips.
Logistics
While lodging is provided, parents' assistance will be needed to keep the herd in check, plan/deliver food and conduct individual daily negotiation toward sleep.
[The summer camp is a collection of investigative activities and field trips intended for 8-12yr olds.]
