Music Science and Technology Workshop
This workshop is organized on behalf of Haiti Project, a non-profit organization with aim of empowering women in Fond-des-Blancs, Haiti. Haiti has a rich tradition of indigenous music instruments, including banza, vaksen, bongo and many others. These instruments are common place and certain to be featured in the upcoming Carnival. In light of the richness of Haitian music, the aim of this workshop is to share some thoughts on music instruments but equally to highlight existing Haitian music instrument traditions.
Plan
The workshop plans to discuss basic principles behind horns, strings and percussion class acoustic instruments, as well as electronic music instruments. In addition to the core discussion centers on music instruments, side notes about mathematics, physics, electronics and music will be included. A substantial amount of time is scheduled to be spent in small teams, creating and building instruments. Teams will rotate in presenting their findings at the conclusion of each day. The workshop will close Thursday Jan 16th afternoon with a participant concert!
Schedule
Morning: 8-9 breakfast, 9-11:30 projects, 12-1 lunch, 2-4:30 activities, 5-6 dinner, 7-8 performances.
Logistics
The workshop is planned for 10-15yr olds. Please be mindful that Jan 12th is the 4th anniversary of the devastating 2010 earthquake. Hosts and organizing team - TBD.
