LOVE2HAITI – The Social Media Movement

LOVE2HAITI is a grassroots campaign originally concepted in Dallas, Texas by a collective or organizations, artists, and individuals seeking to ensure that the needs of those affected by the tremendous earthquake in Haiti were more than just a trending topic on Haiti.  Long after the cameras turn off and the benefit happy hours and parties roll away, will there be a need for relief in this country.  We have already seen what the power of social media can bring and we hope to extend this power with a 1 week long social media experiment, starting at 10:00am on Saturday Feb. 6, 2010 and end at 10:00pm on Saturday Feb. 13, 2010.  The goal of this experiment is to engage in an online conversation about the long term needs of the thousands affected by this natural disaster and to commit ourselves to assisting in this effort, not just once through a text message or Tweet, but consistent support of organizations on the ground making change.

Our Goal: Make relief efforts more than a trending topic on Twitter!

Our Process: Develop a PSA (Public Service Announcement) Mash Up aggregating images and comments from around the world highlighting the needs in Haiti as well as the organizations & individuals leading the relief efforts.   On Saturday Feb. 13th, we will be filming part of the PSA during a private Tweet up during the NBA All-Star Weekend.  If you are interested in participating please email info@marcusgrahamproject.org. The Tweet up will be a 12-hour long refreshment lounge.  We are inviting our Tweetfam, as well as a number of artists, entertainers and media/marketing executives to a hospitality suite where they will be able to give to share in the recording.

Check this link for the press release about the event.

What if I am not coming to All Star? : If you are not able to attend but would like to submit your portion of the PSA, then please record a :30 – 2 min video sharing your comments about the importance of long term assistance to the youth in Haiti, building up the youth generation internationally and the importance & responsibility of global citizenship.  Post a link to your video on this blog post or email the link to info@marcusgrahamproject.org and we will select either the entire video or snippets to include in the the final video project which will be compiled and “mashed up” by March 14, 2010.

This is an organic movement and we hope that you will participate. Oh and if you want the t-shirt designed by the genius that is WATERMELON DEMOCRACY, then please click here. But don’t just be a t-shirt wearer, be an activate participant.

Our long term solution is to partner with an organizations and corporations to build a media lab for youth in Haiti.  We are still looking for the appropriate organization and support and we hope that through this effort we will be able to identify those needs as well as the process to build it.  One of the first things that the country lost was it’s communication.  Let’s restore it!

Participating Organizations include Watermelon Democracy, The People’s Lunch Counter, The Marcus Graham Project, V’s Vibe Spot and Rock The Vote.  Please let us know if you are interested in participating.  Email us at info@marcusgrahamproject.org.
